Chronic Kidney Disease damages the kidneys and the rest of the body. If it is left untreated, it can lead to incapacitating disability and early death. Every patient should be evaluated periodically for kidney disease. Kidney disease is preventable and treatable. Three tests that provide information about the kidneys are the GFR (glomerular filtration rate, which measures kidney function), urinalysis and ultrasound.
Knowledge is power! It is extremely important for patients to control blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, follow a prescribed diet, exercising regularly to maintain an ideal weight and ALWAYS be aware of their GFR.
Patients diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease should work closely with their Nephrologist and their Primary Care doctor to monitor, treat and slow down the progression of the disease process.
